There has been a public house on the site of The Jolly Brewer for many, many years.
The pub has so far been traced back to before Queen Victoria, when it was called "The Royal Cow". Obviously, upon her Royal Highness´ coronation, the name was promptly changed; most likely out of respect, and probably to stop a few heads rolling...
The name was changed from 'The Royal Cow' to 'The Brown Cow', and as far as is currently known, the pub has functioned as a coaching inn, with the back section used as parking for horses. There was also a stage area upstairs.
The pub became 'The Unity' in later years, and was reknowned as a biker pub, but changed to The Jolly Brewer on Valentine's Day, 1982. How romantic...
